Common Green Darner (Anax junius)

The Common Green Darner is one of the largest dragonflies to be seen in the Garden, at about 3 inches in length. The males usually patrol over the ponds nonstop and their bright aqua and green colors are unmistakable. They also hunt around the palms and cycads.

This species is one of the few dragonflies that stays in tandem (when the male grasps the female behind her head with his terminal abdominal appendages) after mating. This behaviour is called contact guarding, and is shown in the photo above. If a male isn't handy, the female can lay eggs all by herself, shown below.
