Arenga engleri, the dwarf sugar palm, is native to Ryukyu Island of southern Japan and from the island of Taiwan. We are probably at the northern limit of this palm's tolerance for cold, but this specimen was grown in Austin for a number of years in Mr. Joe Montgomery's back yard before it was donated to the HPG, and has managed to tolerate Austin winters quite well. In order to thrive in full sun as it does here, this palm requires extra water, but the soil still needs to drain well.

class: Liliopsida / order: Arecales / family: Arecaceae / genus: Arenga / species: engleri
