This is one of the most easily recognized of all our hemipterans due to its unique "gear wheel" shaped prothorax. The Wheel Bug is among the largest members of the assassin bug family. It preys upon large caterpillars, beetle larvae and other insects. While it doesn't normally attack humans, it can give a good bite by using its mouth tube if it is handled. When disturbed, it is unlikely to fly but prefers to crawl away or drop to the ground.
