Bauhinia congesta, the Anacacho orchid tree, is a rare tree native to the Anacacho Mountains of Kinney County, Texas. It is a primitive angiosperm with close relatives in South Africa, Central America, and Southeast Asia. This global distribution is evidence that this genus evolved about the time the super-continent, Pangaea, split into Gondwanaland and Laurasia. The many small, white, orchid-like flowers appear in April in Austin and put on quite a display.
