Bauhinia galpinii, or the Orange orchid tree, is from South Africa. It is not totally cold hardy in our area, but even if some winters it freezes to the ground, it will quickly come back from the roots. Unfortunately, it will not grow well in alkaline soils. It blooms profusely from the end of June until cold weather. It can't seem to make up its mind if it wants to be a small tree or a robust vine, so some pruning is usually necessary to help make up its mind. In any case, it likes to spread out. This photo from the garden shows lotus blossoms to the right nicely offsetting the bougainvillea-like effect of B. galpinii in full bloom.
