Very common throughout the Texas Hill Country, agarita forms a low, sprawling shrub. The blossoms appear in early spring, followed by edible red berries. Slow growing and rarely seeding out, this plant does well in dry, shady areas without becoming invasive. Although the leaves of this plant are very sharply pointed, and can cause a painful prick to human skin, the plants are desirable because of the lovely flowers, foliage and berries, the latter being relished by birds.
