Brahea armata, the Blue Hesper Palm, is native to northern Baja California and adjacent areas of Mexico. It grows in arid canyons, where it can get its roots down to groundwater in otherwise near desert conditions. Because of this, in cultivation it prefers full sun, regular water, but excellent drainage. It is also quite cold hardy - it has yet to show any hint of frost damage in the Hartman Prehistoric Garden. The blue color of the leaves make this palm well worth growing despite its rather slow growth rate, and therefore relatively high price. When planting, it is very important not to disturb the sensitive roots. Always buy a larger plant in a box rather than a pot to make planting this palm without injuring the roots possible.
