Commonly seen in the early morning, the Green Heron comes to the Garden to hunt for fish and frogs in the ponds. In spite of the name, these birds are not particularly green in appearance, but more blue and rust colored. This is the smallest heron, and it rarely stands upright with its neck outstretched. It can usually be seen stalking quietly along the edge of a pond, then suddenly striking out with its long beak and neck to catch a small fish. Although it is quiet when hunting, the green heron often announces its arrival and departure with loud and raucous calls.
