The beautiful red color and frequently heard calls of the Northern Cardinal make it a favorite. Sightings are common in the Garden, and the birds often perch rather close to humans, allowing for easy identification. The thick beak of the cardinal is used most often to crack open seeds and nuts, but the birds also eat insects. The individual pictured above is a male; females are more brown in color.
