Cactus Bug (Chelinidea vittiger)

Almost all prickly pear cactus plants (Opuntia sp.) in the Austin area are attacked at one time or another by Cactus bugs. While the feeding of the bugs leaves unsightly marks (see photo below) on the cactus pads, the plants never seem to suffer too badly, even with heavy infestations. The adults (above) of this species of cactus bug are a pale brown color. Eggs are usually laid in a row on the longest cactus spines. The nymphs (below) usually feed in groups and are either green or red. They resemble tiny Christmas bulbs.
