The Bordered Patch is not seen all that frequently, but it is easily recognized. The strong markings are evident on both the upper and lower sides of the wings of this medium small butterfly.

The larva of the bordered patch are variable in color. Above is the typical dark form with orange spots. Below are the solid orange form. The caterpillars feed together until they are about half grown. Their food plants are sunflowers and other members of the Asteraceae family.
