Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor)

The Common Nighthawk is unusual in that all its relatives (including the Chuck-will's-widow) are strictly nocturnal, but the Common Nighthawk is sometimes seen in broad daylight, as in the bird in this picture, perched in front of a meadow of spring wildflowers. They are most often seen circling around bright lights at night, catching insects on the wing. Their call sounds like a nasal "beer! beer!" Their strong wing beats sporadically change rhythm, giving them an interesting and very distinctive flight pattern.
