Dioon edule has many forms that grow throughout much of Mexico. "Edule" refers to the fact that the seeds were sometimes eaten after careful processing removed the toxins. The leaves are very stiff with a sharp spine on the tip of each leaflet. This is one of the most cold hardy of all the cycads. There are three specimens of this slow growing species on the dinosaur island.
