Dioon spinulosum is one of the two plants that must be brought indoors in the winter, as it cannot survive a hard freeze. Despite its soft look, the leaves are very spiny and can leave small welts that itch for a few hours after contact. This is a relatively fast-growing species from Mexico that can eventually reach a height of over 30 feet. The leaves, when cut, will stay green for a while, and are used in Mexico to decorate churches for Palm Sunday.
