A true tropical visitor to our area, the Julia only appears in the late summer, as it takes it all season to travel north. The upper sides of the long wings are orange, with varying amounts of black markings, usually more on females. The underside of the wings is a mottled tan and brown. These butterflies are wary and agile, rarely letting anyone get close enough for a good look. They are easily recognized however, even at a distance.
