Black Setwing (Dythemis nigrescens)

The setwing gets its name from the characteristic stance it takes when at rest. It never really seems to rest, but is always ready to take flight with its wings held low and forward and its abdomen raised. The black setwing is a slender insect and usually looks black. However, older individuals become more blue in color, especially in certain lighting conditions. These dragonflies are frequently seen flying around the ponds. They are smaller than some of the other species, such as the king skimmers, and are the only dragonflies with such dark bodies. Females are not as dark and have more noticeable light markings, as shown below.
