Not seen as often as some other species, the Swift Setwing is a rather strikingly marked dragonfly. It can often be identified as a setwing by its characteristic stance at rest. The markings on the body of this species are very similar to those of the closely related Checkered Setwing (Dythemis fugax). The swift setwing, however, has only small dark bases to its wings as opposed to the large dark spots on the wings of the checkered. This species also has rather obvious dark wing tips. The individual pictured above is a young male, whose color will darken slightly as he ages.
