The Texas Rat Snake is a very aggressive non-venomous snake. Even young individuals (photo at right) will readily bite if they are picked up. Their weak jaws and small teeth produce no more than a few pricks or scratches, though. These snakes are seen in trees as often as on the ground and are excellent climbers. They eat mostly birds and rodents, sometimes subduing prey by constricting it within loops of their body.
