Skimmers of the genus Libellula are called King Skimmers, because of the way they tend to dominate a pond. The widow skimmer is typical, being large and fast. The males defend their territory with almost constant flying so they are easily spotted during the summer months. Although these dragonflies cannot usually be approached closely, the males can be identified in flight by their black and white wings. The females have paler wing markings and their bodies are black with a pair of yellow stripes.
