The name of the Red-bellied Woodpecker might appear confusing if one goes by obvious field marks. The slight reddish tinge near the rear of its underside is only visible when viewing the bird rather closely from below, as in the photo. However, this woodpecker is easily identified by the fine black and white stripes on its back and the red on the back of the head. The best way to find one of these birds is to listen for their telltale excavating noises as they search for insects in the bark of trees. The bird pictured here was photographed partaking of nectar from an exotic tree in Florida.
