The only poisonous reptile to be reported in the Garden, the Texas Coral Snake is also among the most venomous snakes in the United States. Coral snakes are related to cobras and their venom is a neurotoxin which can kill in very small doses. In spite of the toxicity, and the fact that these snakes are fairly common, they rarely bite people. Their fangs are so small that they do not penetrate clothing and the snakes are generally quite nonaggressive. Coral snakes burrow in leaf litter and amongst rocks, where they prey on other snakes and small lizards.
