The Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of Texas, which gives an idea of how widespread and numerous it is. While the gray, black and white colors of the mockingbird are not particularly spectacular, its vocal abilities certainly do make one take notice. True to its name, it is capable of mimicking the songs of other birds as well as non-avian noises that capture its attention. Their diverse song and call repertoire is most apparent in the springtime, when the birds are the most territorial and trying to attract mates. They often sing from a high and prominent perch. Mockingbirds are also frequently seen attacking cats or dogs that get too close to their nests or catching insects stirred up by grass mowing.
