The Yellow-crowned Night-heron is not particularly nocturnal. It is most active early in the day, but that is the case with many herons. These night-herons frequently feed in temporary bodies of water, like drainage retention ponds after heavy rains, but also spend much time along permanent water. The beak is one of the shortest of the herons, and the bird often rests with its neck retracted, belying the fact that it can rapidly extend it to catch prey.
