At first glance difficult to tell from the Giant Swallowtail, the Thoas Swallowtail does appear different, but not by much. When seen side by side, identification is easy, and it is also possible to tell fresh specimens apart if one has seen a lot of giant swallowtails. The Thoas is smaller, a bit lighter in the yellow parts and the wings are more rounded. These butterflies are also less common in our area than the giant. The individual shown above had settled in for the night and so was approachable.
