There are only two species in the genus Pisaurina recorded for Texas. Both are called Nursery Web Spiders, and the one pictured above is not often seen. This particular spider was running among the rocks and paused for only a second or two before racing off into a crevice.
The nursery web spiders get their name from the protective web they build for their newly hatched young. The female carries her round egg sac in her jaws before they hatch, and continues to protect the young for about a week. At just over ½ inch in length, these are not large spiders, but their long legs give them a more formidable presence.
