As with many mammals, the Raccoon is nocturnal and so is not often encountered in the Garden. It does, however, make its presence known, mostly by rummaging through the garbage can and leaving a mess scattered about. Raccoons are highly intelligent omnivores and, besides scavenging in trash cans, they use their dexterous paws to search for small animal prey under rocks and logs and along the shores of ponds, as well as picking fruit and raiding bird nests. It is not true that raccoons must wash their food before eating. This myth arose from their habit of searching for food among the stones at the water's edge.
