The Southern Purple Mint Moth gets its long common name from an attempt to give two key identifiers at one time: it lives in the south and it prefers plants like purple sage, a salvia which is in the mint family (Labiatae). Not very commonly seen, this moth is only about ½ inch long but has quite a recognizable wing pattern. As with many species of the Pyralid family, the face appears pointed. The projection is created by the labial palps, appendages that lie on either side of the proboscis.
