Ground Skink (Scincella lateralis)

©larvalbug

The Ground Skink is rarely seen because it lives and forages in the leaf litter, preferring to remain hidden from view. It grows to about 5 inches in length, over half of which is tail. Because of its shiny, smooth scales, small size, and wiggly locomotion, this lizard is sometimes mistaken for a salamander when people encounter it while gardening.
