While most mammals are nocturnal, the Fox Squirrel is not. Being diurnal, it is often seen not only in the HPG, but everywhere around Austin where there are trees. This species is the only tree squirrel found in our area and is the largest in North America, averaging about 2.5 feet in length.
Fox squirrels come in various colors, from gray to black, but the ones here are almost all reddish brown. They can be seen foraging both on the ground and in the trees, and are commonly seen noisily chasing each other at high speed through the branches.
