Centipedes are rarely seen out in the open as they prefer to hide under rocks or leaf litter. They are predators and have venom glands which can deliver a painful bite, so it is well advised to use caution when handling these creatures. The Giant Red-headed Centipede is the largest in our area, growing up to about 6 inches in length. Although it is also called a Desert Centipede, those in the garden seem to be attracted to wet areas and sometimes drown if they fall into a pond.

class: Chilopoda / order: Scolopendromorpha / family: Scolopendridae / genus: Scolopendra / species: heros
