This small evergreen tree is a very popular landscape plant in the Austin area. It is slow growing, but very drought tolerant, while having attractive foliage all year and a spectacular blossom display in the spring. It will grow and bloom in both sun and shade. The purple flowers are scented and look much like those of wisteria. Late freezes can sometimes completely kill the flowers for the year but have no effect on the health of the trees. The seeds of the Texas mountain laurel are large and bright red, encased within a tough gray pod.
