Not as brilliantly colored as the Black-necked Garter Snake, the Checkered Garter Snake is also less often seen. It is quite docile and will retreat at the slightest disturbance. Although its diet consists mainly of worms, tadpoles and frogs, the Checkered Garter Snake will also eat carrion, an unusual tendency among snakes.
