The Painted Lady holds the distinction of being the most widespread butterfly species in the world. It occurs in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Because of this large range, it is sometimes called the Cosmopolitan. It is also, like the Monarch, migratory. The Painted Lady cannot survive the cold northern winters, but moves north every summer up to Canada. The larvae of this butterfly eat a wide variety of plants, and frequently prefer thistles, giving them a common name of Thistle Butterfly.
